Merck Foundation (www.Merck-Foundation.com), the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany released the twelfth episode of its television program “Our Africa by Merck Foundation” on Saturday 2n/a July 2022 on KTN, Kenya, rebroadcast every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and on sunday 3rd July on NTV, Uganda, rebroadcast every Thursday at 4 p.m. The television program is also broadcast on GH One TV in Ghana, every Sunday, repeated every Monday at 1:30 p.m.
The twelfth episode of “Our Africa by Merck Foundation” tackles the important topic of “women empowerment”. Recent episodes of the show have addressed the importance of early detection and prevention of diabetes, removing the stigma around infertility, supporting girls’ education, promoting a Healthy Living, Ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Coronavirus Health Awareness, Sustainability and Upcycled Fashion and Gender Based Violence (GBV). The TV program received excellent feedback from viewers in the three countries and social media followers across Africa and beyond.

‘Our Africa by Merck Foundation’ is a Pan-African TV program This is conceptualized, produced, directed and co-hosted by Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation showcase African fashion designers, singers and prominent experts from various fields with the aim of raising awareness and creating a culture change across Africa. The show is co-hosted by Brian Mulondo from Uganda.

“We have tackled this very sensitive topic of women’s empowerment through Merck Foundation’s ‘Fashion and Art with Purpose’ community. I strongly believe that media, fashion and art should have a purpose at the beyond entertainment and beauty and can raise awareness on issues such as diabetes awareness, removing infertility stigma, ending child marriage, stopping FGM, stopping GBV, supporting girls’ education and empowering women, among other social and health issues affecting the continent.Through our programs, we aim to reach youth and other members of urban and rural communities across the continent to address and raise awareness of a wide range of social and health issues plaguing Africa,” added Dr Rasha Kelej.

The twelfth episode of “Our Africa by Merck Foundation” features Prince Akpah, Founder and Managing Director, Avance Media, Ghana; Wezi Afro-Soul Singer; Songwriters Advocate and Humanitarian, Zambia; Dr. Sabrina Devi Ramamy Iranah, Director of the Fashion and Design Institute, Mauritius and Jean Luc Emile, Chief Editor, Defimedia Group, Mauritius. Mauritian fashion designers: Dasheena Deena Appaddo and Desire Cedric Vincent presented their creations in this episode displaying strong and relevant messages on women’s empowerment.
Senator, Dr. Rasha further emphasized, “Empowering girls and women is part of our DNA at Merck Foundation. Together with our Ambassadors, African First Ladies, we work closely to empower women and girls through our programs, including our “More than a mother” Country, “Educating Linda” program, Advancement of Merck Foundation Capabilitiesand Merck Foundation STEM Program”.
Merck Foundation’s “More Than a Mother” campaign is a strong movement that aims to empower women living with infertility through access to information, education, mindset change and empowerment. economic empowerment.
“In collaboration with African First Ladies, Merck Foundation has provided more than 590 scholarships (out of a total of 1334 scholarships) to female doctors for critical and underserved specialties; especially those related to women’s health and reproductive health such as the specialty of fertility, embryology and sexual and reproductive care, as well as other specialties such as oncology, diabetes, endocrinology , respiratory care, intensive care, preventive cardiology and many more.
To quantify our total efforts to transform access to better women’s health, I am proud that we have provided more than 400 fellowships to physicians (177 female and 228 male physicians) from 39 countries, with the aim of advancing the women’s health by strengthening reproductive and sexual health care and fertility care capacity in Africa and beyond,” Senator Rasha Kelej explained their impact.
Merck Foundation also supports childless women by helping them to start their own small business. It’s about giving every woman the respect and support she deserves to lead a fulfilling life, with or without children.
“Additionally, we have also trained over 2200 media representatives from over 35 countries, to be the voice of the voiceless and raise awareness in the community about addressing the stigma of female infertility and other critical issues such as: ending child marriage, stopping GBV, supporting girls, education and empowerment of women.In partnership with the First Ladies of Africa, we have also announced awards for media, fashion designers, filmmakers and musicians/singers to raise awareness through their creative work about these critical social and health issues,” explained Senator, Dr Rasha.
Merck Foundation strongly believes that education is one of the most critical areas for women empowerment. Thanks to their “Educating Linda” program, Merck Foundation and African First Ladies have supported the education of many unprivileged but bright African girls by providing scholarships, so that they can reach their potential and pursue their dreams.
Merck Foundation also announced the MARS Rewards appreciate and recognize ‘Best African Women Researchers’ and ‘Best Young African Researcher’. The aim is to empower African women and young researchers, advance their research capacity and promote their contribution to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
