Paul Bettany, a British actor, had already proven himself as a talented performer before landing the role of Vision in the hit film Vision. Paul Bettany was best known for his supporting role in all your favorite movies until he started playing one of the most intriguing Avengers in the Marvel Universe.
He started performing in his youth before entering the Drama Center in London, where he was born into a theatrical family. He was immediately cast in plays.
Paul Bettany has portrayed a range of roles in his very limited film career, including a tennis professional, a famous writer, an albino hermit and the voice of a supercomputer, to name but a few.
Here is a list of the films and series not to be missed on Paul Bettany:
Uncle Frank
2020 | Drama/Comedy
It’s the 1970s, and Beth Bledsoe Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany), a university professor in New York, is the only person she admires in her family. When she shows up unannounced at his apartment, she learns that her uncle is gay and lives with his lover, a fact he had hidden from the rest of the family.
The uncle-niece combo set off on a journey home after learning of the loss of a family, a journey that ultimately significantly impacts their entire lives, for better or worse.
Manhunt: Deadly Games

2017 | 1 season | Drama
This anthology series examines a variety of massive acts of terrorism and their perpetrators. The first season follows Ted Kaczynski, dubbed the “Unabomber” by the media, who orchestrated a series of bombs across the United States in the late 1990s.
It features Paul Bettany as the Unabomber and Sam Worthington as FBI agent Jim Fitzgerald, who helped bring down the terrorist, in a dramatically fictionalized take on true events.
Avengers: Age of Ultron

2015 | Action/Science Fiction
JARVIS didn’t become Vision’s built-in personality until this film, giving him existence in his own body and giving his career a boost by being one of the Avengers’ most powerful teammates.
The film follows Tony Stark as he works with Bruce Banner to create Ultron, an artificial intelligence system. When the sentient Ultron plots to exterminate humanity, the Avengers are sent to stop him.
In a genre plagued by sentient technology, the character may just be another talking robot. However, Bettany’s performance in the part elevates Vision to a new level.
He comes with a plethora of understanding of the world and people in general due to the nature of who he is. In reality, as a sentient entity, the first thing he has to do is decide whether or not he loves humans enough to fight for them.
The secret life of bees

2008 | Drama/Adaptation
In a film full of very hard-to-watch scenes, Paul Bettany’s child-abusing character in The Secret Life of Bees has unsettling resonance. The story revolves around a little girl who is forced to evacuate her abusive father (played by Bettany) and finds refuge in the black community.
Once again, Bettany has found a way to convert a character from a potentially uninteresting note into a chance to illustrate the richness of life experiences. For better or for worse, it tackles the negative underbelly of power relations and how they end up terribly affecting black people based in the United States.
The end of the journey

2017 | War/Drama
The drama Journey’s End, written by RC Sherriff, depicts the lives of a troop of soldiers during World War I and their harrowing experiences, particularly with trench warfare.
Since its publication in 1928, the play has been made into five films, the most recent being the 2017 film starring Paul Bettany, Asa Butterfield and Sam Claflin of Peaky Blinders.
Wimbledon
2004 | Romance/Comedy
Wimbledon, from 2004, is a bit of an oddity in Paul Bettany’s filmography. He’s a man who thrives in supporting roles and finds ways to turn problematic characters into accessible, albeit faded, heroes. Which is why his transition to lead acting roles in this otherwise basic rom-com was unexpected.
Bettany plays Peter Colt, a professional tennis player from the UK who is rapidly losing his former greatness.
The plot is a conventional romantic comedy about a man who, just in time for everyone to get what they want, overcomes his personal selfishness and learns to love. By simply being someone worth adoring, Bettany’s avatar wins over viewers and — her romantic lead.
Captain America: Civil War
2017 | Action/Adventure
The heroes were split into two teams during the 2016 Civil War, with Captain America and Iron Man fighting on opposite sides. Both sides were fighting for what they thought was right, and while Black Panther and Spider-Man’s introduction to the MCU was fantastic, the events of the film had huge negative consequences.
Vision is still used to being a bodily person in the film, but he is involved in combat and forced to fight against individuals who are meant to be his allies.
Wanda Vision

2021 | 1 season | Situation comedy
WandaVision wasn’t the first television program based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it had a clear connection to the events of the film in a way that previous shows didn’t. More importantly, it gave two members of the Avengers some well-deserved recognition.
The teasers and videos hinted at something very special, and it delivered on that promise. Despite Vision being killed in Infinity War, he was technically born for WandaVision and then died again, he continues to live in the form of “White Vision”, hence we can expect that Paul Bettany resurfaces in future MCU films.
There is no confirmation yet for season 2 as fans are eagerly waiting for the new season.
